The irresistible urge to go fishing

At this very moment my boat is getting a complete overhaul. Timing couldn’t have been better as most of the beginning of 2020 has been filled with horrible winds. Most days wouldn’t have been effective anyway to go out on the big lakes in the Netherlands. Most boat anglers I know do not have a very successful start of 2020. But does this stop us from fishing? I don’t think so!

On the rare moments that I did fish in January 2020 so far, I had the pleasure of catching a pike over 13 and even one over 15kg! Also, I was blessed with being able to join a buddy of mine, Bas Halsema, on a pelagic zander session at night. Now you might think that fishing at night in January is stuff out of nightmares. Trust me, I did so too but when the wind is non-existent and you dress up properly… It’s actually a great experience!

Great start of 2020, despite the weather!

We managed to get a couple of great zander up, the biggest measuring 92cm! Pelagic fishing at night with all the gear, sonars and thrill of chasing fish for several minutes is a whole new dimension to our beloved hobby. Definitely something I will do more often but I don’t think my urge to catch big pike will suffer.

Having a change of plans due to weather or maintenance on your boat, creates opportunities to focus on different species or techniques. It also helps to jump on board with other anglers and not be the captain for once. It is refreshing to observe and learn while others come up with a game plan. I recently recorded a slow trolling video with buddy Frans van der Putte. We didn’t get many takes but caught a stunning big winter pike, which we will show on the Savage Gear website soon!

Vampire hunting in the night!

Not having a boat at your disposal makes you focus on fishing from the banks again as well. While I am writing this BLOG post I just wrapped up my preparations for fishing with fellow Savage angler Nick Landman. Our focus will be big perch and I have a feeling that Nick can teach me a thing or two… Keep you posted on our progress guys!
