Summer chubin’

It is mid-July and we are feeling the summer vibes. Scorching days followed by dramatic rainstorms. It is been a wetter summer than usual, but the fishing action has been on fire. Post lock-down I have been traveling from coast to coast in search of Bass, Wrasse and everything in between, but I have still saved time for my favourite... Summer Chubin’.

Walking wild, overgrown, small, flowing rivers for opportunistic chub has long been a passion of mine.  In past summers water levels have been low and weed high, meaning top water has been the best option. My go to is the 3D Cicada, which has produced numerous specimens to 65cm.

This summer the extra water has opened a whole new world of crankbait fishing. By working lures tip high, I have been able to twitch the Goby Crank through runs I have never fished before. The results have spoken for themselves. Fishing upstream, down and across has produced numerous of decent fish. Stealth being the main key to success.

The 40mm 3D Goby Crank PHP is an absolute chub magnet. I remove the front hook to reduce weed fouling and search each aspect of the swim. The Gobys have a very seductive wobble and strong rattle triggering strikes. Fished on the slowest of winds they achieve a great action popping up fairly fast on the stop making them perfect for running over weed for chub. A must have in the tackle box if you love your small river fishing.
