TAKING FULL ADVANTAGE OF THE WARM WINTER

Winter?! More like 6 months of Autumn - the perfect time to go out for some pike fishing!

The new Savage Gear website is live and we’ve had some great response so far. We are stoked to blow you away the coming months with tips, tricks and quality content! In the meantime, we all got our sights on winter fishing. Whether with deadbait, going out to fish from the banks on spots that are now finally accessible or trolling with big rubber baits on deep water.

Deep winter spots are usually the main focus for January!

As a fanatic boat angler, the flexibility of a boat to get to spots that are normally is what lures me away from the banks. Deadbait fishing used to be a popular thing for me, it can be really efficient when you find them packed together and you can have some amazing results. But the hassle of getting fresh baitfish combined with fishing on locations that are crowded with either anglers or non-anglers and the fishing pressure on some prime spots, made me lose interest. Sure, you could do it in a more active way with a dropshot or even twitching your deadbait. But nothing beats a pike smashing your lure!

And thus, I haven’t touched deadbaits at all this winter. Mostly because of the insanely high temperatures. My buddy Jakob came over from Sweden to fish with lures in the Netherlands, since the area around Stockholm is usually frozen rock solid in the beginning of January. On the contrary, open water is still possible in big parts of Sweden.

Burbots are my first choice in the colder months on deeper water!

Whether it is climate change or not (and if so, man-made or a natural cycle) this Autumn that has been going on since beginning of November has some benefits! For instance, pike still seem active enough to hunt pelagic and are still close to the drop-offs, closer than they normally are. Who knows that we might be able to fish the shallows beginning of February?!

In the meantime, we still need to find them a bit deeper than we want to. Burbots are high on the menu for now, when the temperature rises a bit more towards 10 degrees Celsius, I will dust off the big trouts to generate more speed and cover more water. When they hit the shallows, I am really curious to see how the new Pulse Tails will perform pre-spawn. If that doesn’t work, the good old Jerkster always comes to the rescue!

The Pulse Tail Roach did well in 2019… Can’t wait to fish them this Spring!

Happy hunting guys. See you in the next post!
