Luring pre-spawn fish 29.04.2013
From our Croatian consultant, Dalien Vignjevic, we have yet another cool report:
"I went to fish Lokvarsko lake - a huge highland reservoir with clear, deep water and steep banks just 10 days after the ice had melted.
I knew the pike should still be around spawning time, so I chose to fish the shallow bays. My local buddy Daniel Å najder said they had some big fish following but not taking the lures, so I knew I had to fish with pauses to give that skittish pre/post spawning pike a chance to catch up with the lure....
It didn't take very long before I got a huge close-to-a-meter male in the boat, and some 15 minutes later, I had an even bigger fish rise to my 4play lure, but just nipped at the lure without engulfing it properly...
It was a day to remember thanks to the 4play 19 cm lowrider, which was a perfect lure for staying in the strike zone as long as it takes and combining pauses with erratic bursts. I also painted the back of the lure in white, so I could track it better in the water and notice possible following pike.
I used my super trusty Okuma C3 one piece rod and Okuma Komodo baitcaster for quiet underhand pitches near the shore which was also important for these spooky fish...

Competition-winning pike 22.04.2013
From Rikard Jonsson, we have the following report:
"I went to a local competition yesterday, and the fishing was really slow at the beginning. After about four hours, I rigged my 40cm Real Eel with a corkscrew rig, just to be able to fish very shallow with a really slow retrive.
After maybe 5 throws, I feel my Savage Gear Big Pike rod bend like crazy and my Okuma Citrix reel has to work really hard to land the competitions biggest pike. She was 113cm with a monstrous head and a wide back. The 4th pike of the season sets the pace for the rest of the year!"

27.03.2013
From our Croatian Savage Gear consultant, Dalien Vignjevic, we have the following:
"It`s been a long cold winter here in Croatia, and it still shows teeth not allowing Spring to kick in. I went for an early season bass trip hoping to finally catch one, but it didn`t look promising after the temperature gauge read 8°C water temp - super cold for the end of March.
The water actually cooled down as a result of several cold fronts in a row which can be devastating in early spring. These conditions usually ask for slow moving finesse baits with lots of pauses.
That finesse approach didn`t get me a bite the whole day, and to make things worse (or better in the end) another cold front just started rolling in making the sky overcast and the wind stronger by the minute.
Incoming fronts are usually great for bass fishing, so I said to myself:" Shallow clear water, lots of grass, overcast skies and lot of chop on the water are perfect for topwater fishing conditions - lets give it a go regardless of the cold water temp. "
I tied on a serious bass snack in terms of the Savage Gear Panic Prey 13,5 cm that walks the dog and splashes water at the same time. It was a perfect lure for choppy water and it didn`t take long before one crushed it on the surface, totally provoked by the action of the bait "in panic". He didn`t care about the water temp and incoming snow storm...
Though not a giant, this fish absolutely made my day and was a cool reward for "out of the box" thinking and persistence".
I also got this catch on camera for everyone to enjoy...

Pike frenzy 11.03.2013
From our UK bounty hunter, Ant Glascoe, we have this amazing report:
'I had an awesome day with my Savage apprentice Matt Welsby. We targeted a small canal network where the pike were hammering the fry. This was the perfect opportunity to target them on the smaller stuff, Prey 85s, 15cm Real Eels and some of the Savage Gear Finesse range lures.
We fished from 8.30am finishing at 9.30pm that night, catching 20 Pike with 10 over 10lbs including a fine Specimen over 20lbs, all fat on roach fry'.

Pike fishing in Ruegen 04.03.2013
Danish pike angler, Michael Stenum Sørensen, visited Ruegen this weekend armed with a handful of newly bought 19 and 25cm Herring Shads. The first few casts he did with a 25cm Loose Body Herring Shad in the Blue Back colour, and the response was immediate. BAM! And a 122cm 11.2kilo pike had hammered the lure.
The rest of the trip provided great action, and in the icy-cold water especially the 19cm Herring Shad proved deadly.

Mega-zander for Boris 27.02.2013
We got this awesome shot from Croatia`s zander connoisseur Boris Leskovar. He says that for his heavy jigging applications he likes to use LB minnows, Cannibals and LB Grubs among other lures.
This beautiful fat fish was a perfect way to end the zander season. Releasing the fish was also a great example for others to follow and a treat for us who strongly support catch and release...
Congratulations from all of us at Savage Gear Boris!
